David Sharpe "Prairie Light"

$1,270.00

12” x 16” Framed, Oil on birch panel 2025

“My approach to my work hasn’t changed really from when I started to paint 25 years ago as a founding member of the Ontario Plein Air Society. When I started I was captivated by the more quiet places on the planet. And I still am. I don’t believe a painting has to shout to be heard.

Living in the foothills of Alberta, the bones of the land show through more because they are more visible. Landmarks like ridges, coulees, rivers and cloudforms hold me.Wide swaths of prairie hold their own beauty and I see them as large design forms on near and far horizons. I strive more to portray mood and atmosphere as they touch my soul. Design is an important part of my work. I like to keep it simple. Less is always more.

My early influences are the American Tonalists who painted on the East coast of the US from 1890 to 1920. Their quiet poetic compositions and colours are still unsurpassed and as one of only 2 Canadian members of the current American Tonalist Society in NYC, I hope my work keeps their spirit alive.

A collector said to me once ‘David your work is more poetic than picturesque’.

And I’m just fine with that.”

“An Honours graduate in illustration from the Alberta College of Art and Design, I’ve taught drawing and design at the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU), Concordia University, and Capilano College in Vancouver. I’ve Lectured extensively at Queens University, St Lawrence College and Humber College where I sat on the College’s Advisory Board. I’ve also taught workshops in Canada and the US...My Work has won numerous awards at plein air events and exhibitions and is actively collected in Canada and the USA. My Work is Featured in current painting instruction books, and I teach zoom workshops via Winslow Artcenter in Seattle.I’m one of 2 Canadian members of the prestigious American Tonalist Society in New York. I’m active on Facebook and Instagram and invite you to visit me.”
