Noctalgia: Guided By Stars We Can No Longer See

In an era dominated by the ceaseless glow of artificial satellites, astronomers worldwide find themselves immersed in a profound sense of melancholy. The once-prominent stars that adorned our night skies are fading into obscurity, overshadowed by the relentless intrusion of man-made luminance. This diminishing celestial spectacle has given birth to a poignant term: "Noctalgia."

"Noctalgia" encapsulates more than the loss of a clear view of the stars; it echoes the resonating challenges of our contemporary existence. Much like our endeavors to navigate the cosmos guided by stars now obscured, our daily lives are marked by the negotiation of unfamiliar terrain. It serves as a metaphor for the intellectual, spiritual, and literal odysseys we undertake through uncharted territories.

In extending an invitation to artists, we encourage an exploration and expression of this profound concept in their work. Whether capturing the yearning for the darkness that once defined our nights or expressing a longing for brighter stars, artists are encouraged to delve into the shared human experiences embedded in "Noctalgia." Through the medium of art, we aim to collectively traverse the intricate landscapes of our emotions and reflections, fostering a shared dialogue on the complexities of our contemporary world.

Chrissy Nickerson: "42km"

Chrissy Nickerson: "42km"

“These paintings were created from a sketchbook which chronicled a 42km hike into the backcountry in the Canadian rockies.   The work is pure paint, to be discussed as such, but the stories of the locations and the sketchbook are embedded in history.  Painters have been lured into these passes by legends, with the drive to revive them through deeply personal paint language. Whose story am I here to tell? While I hike and draw and read about these places, I string together the inspirations beyond geology and composition; from Egypt to the Canadian fur trade, the First Nations people, gold, paint, consumerism….. The escape from it all to the space of a clean white page.  Freedom. “

Missing Noah Exhibition Opening

This disaster has a name: The 2021 Pacific Northwest floods

The idea for this series of five paintings started last November when I saw a poignant image on Facebook of a bunch of drenched cows being rescued by a good Samaritan on his fishing boat.

In British Columbia, not only the roads were destroyed, the land completely submerged but the animals were drowning.

Some people would float their boats inside the barns and help save the animals. Sometimes, they would drag a swimming cow to dry land, sometimes they would embark a handful of animals in their boats.

Brad Mueller, the man driving the boat on the image I saw, is an electrician from a neighboring town and one of the volunteers who worked day and night to rescue animals from drowning in their pens. He is a Modern Noah to me.

The Remnants Series - Exhibition Opening Reception

*Remnant definition: a small remaining quality of something or trace remaining.

Last year I created a series of work titled ‘Together in Isolation’ during the first wave of the pandemic. This series was in reaction to the shutdown of the world as we knew it and a time to rethinking our priorities as well as reshaping the need to feel a part of a community.

‘Remnants’ is a continuation of that isolation series but is much more about introspection and taking the time to pause and reflect on the past two years.
